Join the Dorchester County Democratic Central Committee!

Every four years, the Democrats of Dorchester County elect the members of the county-level Democratic Party, formally known as the Democratic Central Committee (DCC). Several members were elected during the July 2022 gubernatorial primary. Currently between elections, the DCC is recruiting six additional members to fill six vacant positions.
New members will start on/about April 12, 2023 and continue through November of 2026, at which point all members interested in continuing will run for their seats. The work is entirely voluntary.

What the DCC does: We exist and organize to elect Democrats to seats governing Dorchester County, up and down the ballot. We do that by recruiting candidates, presenting them to voters, and after the primaries, throwing our full support behind the Democratic slate. In 2020, we organized Blue Waves along route 50 to show the world that Eastern Shore Democrats are a vibrant force for change! In 2022, we held forums with primary candidates and then swung into support the fabulous 2022 Democratic ticket with Get-Out-The-Vote (GOTV) activities such as house parties, candidate meet-and-greets, sign distribution, phone and door-to-door canvassing, mailings, flyers, etc.

When we’re not actively engaged in campaigns, we work to support our party’s principles of social equity and justice across the realms of health care, education, child and elder care, and housing. We’ve been quite engaged in marches and vigils related to Black Lives Matter, Ruth Bader Ginsburg, and the January 6 insurrection. We are currently focusing on strengthening governance in both Cambridge City and Dorchester County. In 2023, we plan numerous community outreach activities focused on voter education.

Responsibilities of DCC members:

Attend the monthly DC DCC meeting, subcommittee, ad hoc and external meetings as appropriate;

Serve as an officer and/or chair a subcommittee. Officer roles include Chair, Vice Chair, Secretary and Treasurer. Subcommittees include communications, GOTV, networking, fundraising, and data management;

Take part in activities scheduled by the DC DCC;
-
Make annual and occasional contributions to the DC DCC within their means.

Represent the Dorchester Democratic Party as requested by the Chair.

Structure of the DCC: We have 14 members, 10 distributed across Dorchester’s Council Districts and 4 at-large. As we are gender balanced, this means the Committee comprises a man and a woman from each of the five council districts, and two men and women at large. We will be proud to seat gender non binary individuals in any of those seats.

At present, the DCC needs men or nonbinary candidates from Council Districts 1, 2 and 4. We also need a woman or nonbinary candidate from CD 2.
​
How to apply for a seat on the DCC:
Members are typically elected during the gubernatorial primary. In between elections, the DCC can fill vacant positions by recruiting candidates of the following qualifications:

Registered Democrat, with a history of activism;

Resident of Dorchester;
-
Energy, resourcefulness, time, and perseverance to support Democratic candidates and causes; and
-
Leadership ability, good communications skills and collaborative qualities.
If you’d like to join the committee, fill out the application found here by February 28, 2023. The committee will interview finalist applicants in February with the expectation of seating new members no later than the April 12, 2023 meeting.

As we are gender balanced, this means the Committee comprises a man and a woman from each of the five council districts, and two men and women at-large. Responsibilities of DC DCC members: The DC DCC meets at least once monthly to review priorities and progress. Members are also active with outreach activities such as generating content for the Committee’s various communications platforms, working with representatives of neighboring counties and the Maryland Democratic Party to coordinate activities; recruiting and leading volunteers; as well as managing finances and fundraising. At election time, all hands are on deck to get out the Democratic vote. Formal roles include Chair, Vice Chair, Secretary and Treasurer. We also have subcommittees for communications, GOTV, networking, fundraising, and data management. Responsibilities also include:
